If you’ve been in our clinic recently, you’ll probably have heard a bit of buzz about the exciting destinations we’re planning to travel to from Kelowna either over the holidays or next year. We can’t wait! Meanwhile, we know we need to prepare our skin and ourselves for the change of weather and the various environments we’ll travel through to get there. We always consider a holistic approach to taking care of our skin too. Come with us on our packing journey and be skincare prepared for your next adventure.
First, Know Where You’re Going
You’ve heard us tell you many times before that a skincare routine is not a one-way-works-for-all. Neither is a climate, environment, or diet. A tropical paradise with humidity needs much different protection than a bustling city with pollution. You’ll also have to check the weather forecast to see what’s being predicted. Will it be hot and sunny or cold and gloomy? Arid dry or wet rain?
What To Pack: Colder climates require richer moisturizers to combat dryness. Lightweight serums and moisturizers are best for humidity. Both cold and warm climates require sunscreen! Also, be sure to bring nourishing lip balms with sun protection.
Onyx Staff Favourite In-Destination Product: Colorescience Lipshine is a hard working tinted lip care product. It is formulated with peptides, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E antioxidants, which all work to hydrate your lips, refine texture, and improve their condition. Plus, it has all-mineral SPF protection, comes in various colours, and we like that the skincare line uses 100% pure, natural minerals, antioxidants, and botanicals. Be sure to reapply this product multiple times to keep your lips sun protected, even on a cloudy day.
Second, Know How You’ll Get There
What is your mode of transportation? Will you be commuting with others on buses or walking through busy airports? These are high-traffic, congested spaces that require a little extra skincare attention and protection.
What To Pack: Hand sanitizer and hand cream are a must! Bring an empty water bottle for the free water-filling stations and ongoing hydration. Avoid touching your face and be sure to wash your hands regularly.
Onyx Staff Favourite Airport Product: 2 oz Hale Derma is a refreshing spritz and multi-use product. It is formulated with a pH balance of 5.5, which helps support your skin’s natural defences and destorys harmful pathogens on the skin’s surface. This means you can use it as as hand sanitizer, seat sanitizer, last minute deodorant, and treatment for acne, wounds, rashes. Plus it can be taken in a carry-on or hand bag, making it very useful wherever you go.
Third, Pack for Ease
The best skincare companions are efficient, versatile, and space-saving; they don’t draw attention at security because they’re barely there in size and they serve multiple purposes. Bonus: they leave your bags with extra space for in-destination shopping!
What To Pack: Travel-sized, medical-grade products. Two-in-one products like a hydrating lip balm with SPF.
Onyx Staff Favourite Compact Product: Colorescience Brush on SPF is an all-mineral powder sunscreen that can be worn on its own or over makeup for daily protection and coverage. It’s water and sweat resistant (up to 80 minutes) and goes beyond UV with blue light (HEV), pollution, and infrared defense. We love that it is infused with hyaluronic acid and has a blend of antioxidants. And because it’s a powder, it does not cut into liquid allowances.
Fourth, Pack for Long-Term Care
Although space saving is helpful and critical at times, we’ll argue that it’s most important to bring the products you’re creating a regular skincare routine with. This is especially important if you’ve recently mapped out a plan to combat any issues or challenges you’ve been working through with your skin.
What To Pack: Aging and acne-combatting products, serums, retinoids, and intensifiers.
Onyx Staff Favourite Long-term Care Product: Skinbetter SOLO. This product has been designed for men but it is for universal use. The serum is rich in antioxidants and helps control sebum so it is perfect for acne-prone skin. It is a moisturizing gel consistency so it is hydrating as well. This product is a great all-in-one for those who prefer a simpler routine. We keep one in our suitcase at all times! (Skinbetter Science products are dermatologist tested, paraben free, fragrance free, dye free and cruelty free.)
Fifth, Pack to Pamper
You’re heading on vacation, now is the perfect time to treat yourself to the utmost relaxation and rejuvenation! If you have the extra space, take your favourite and most soothing skin products. Carve out time to yourself and if you have the extra means, splurge on a spa visit and request the most nourishing products.
What To Pack: Sheet masks, jade rollers, body creams, bath soaks.
Onyx Staff Favourite Long-term Care Product: Onyx signature scented candle. We might be biased, but this scent is our favourite! And so relaxing! It comes in a 2 oz size that is perfect for on-the-go. This is another product we keep in our bags at all times, it’s just too easy not to!
Last, Pack Extra!
Travel plans don’t always play out as planned. Be sure to pack the products you need for the time you’ll be away but with enough to last if your plans change or extend. And if they do, roll with it and enjoy some extra “you time”!
